PULLIA PLEDGES HELP TO THE SHELTER HOUSE AND THE TASK FORCE ON POVERTY

Once elected as Mayor, Frank Pullia will ensure that Shelter House and the Task Force on Poverty are a high priority on his Agenda. Even though there has been much rhetoric about how great things are in the City; the fact remains that a large segment of our population is still facing hardship in meeting their essential needs.

Pullia says, "The Shelter House has done a tremendous job of addressing the problem of homelessness in our community, and relieving to a large extent Council’s responsibility towards such issue. When we deal with issues of poverty, we usually hear that there is no money. What we should be hearing is that our priorities need to be readjusted."

Pullia believes that it is incumbent upon our leadership to demonstrate a true commitment to these fundamental issues not just in words but also in deeds.

Pullia served on the Task Force on Poverty when it was a committee of Council, and as Mayor, he will propose to reinstate it to that status.

Pullia says, "throughout my years of volunteer work, I have witnessed firsthand the tremendous spirit of caring present in this community. City Council needs to take a more proactive role in ensuring that such spirit continues to be demonstrated at their level."

Shelter House provides a vital service in our community that must be maintained. As Mayor, Pullia will work hard to ensure that Shelter House remains a viable option for those in need.

Frank Pullia will be at Shelter House between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2000, and will be available to answer questions. For more information, please contact Frank Pullia at (807) 767-6579 or (807) 474-8294.

Note: less than 2 weeks after this media release, Shelter House has received enough funding (approximately $36,000) from the Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board, to allow it to remain open for 24 hours a day for a least 6 months.
